The Nunda Historical Society was gifted the former Tunningley/Stamp automobile/RV sales building at 24 Portage Street by Tom and Marjorie Stamp in 1999. With the assistance of grants and generous donations from members, building renovations and exhibits resulted in dedication of the Nunda Museum and Rose M. Shave Gallery in 2003. Since then, an archive room, workshop and storage space, a pavilion for outdoor education programs, an improved HVAC system, and an extensive exhibit telling the 200 Year “Story of Nunda” have been added. |
The renovations and additions over the past 20 years have been significant, including the much-needed recent restoration of the historic stucco front of our building, accomplished with the help of a generous member donation. However, we still have the following pressing needs: additional space to properly care for our growing collection of treasures from Nunda’s past; to improved public access to research materials and educational programming; to upgrade and expand our HVAC system, and to increase the energy efficiency and aesthetics of the NHS building. |
|
To address these needs we plan to: construct an 835 sq. ft addition on the west side of the building; create and furnish an archives room and a combination research room/classroom in the new addition;expand the HVAC system into the new addition and current museum area; and upgrade the east and west sides of the building with new siding. |

The total estimated cost of the Building Project is $160,000. The work will be completed in three stages as the needed funds are raised. Stage One, including the addition, new rooms and expanded HVAC system will begin at $120k. Stage Two, siding the west side of the building will take place after an additional $20k. Stage Three, siding the east side, will finish the project for an additional $20k. MARCH 2024 UPDATE: Thanks to the generousity of our members, local businesses and the general public we have now have at total of $143,000 and can start the first two stages of the project. We still need your help to complete the work! Please consider making a donation to the Nunda Historical Society for this important building project. Your contribution will help us in our work to preserve our past and bring our local history to area residents of all ages!
