Kneeland, Benjamin T. b. June 3rd, 1825, and was 80 years and 3 months old at the time of his death, September 3rd, 1905. He chose the medical profession for a life’s work and was graduated from Geneva Medical College June 23rd, 1851. On June 14th m. Miss Harriet Niles, daughter of Hon. Geo. N. Niles, of Scott, Cortland County, N. Y., and they immediately came to Oakland, this county, where he began the practice of his profession. He soon afterward moved to Nunda and later to Geneseo and to Lima. In 1862 he decided to join the First New York Dragoons as surgeon and he took his family back to Nunda to live. He was a physician in Tuscarora as described by Jesse Rittenhouse in her autobiography. As surgeon of the First New York Dragoons, Dr. Kneeland won immortal fame. His military life was characterized by loyalty, bravery and devotion and many lives and limbs were saved by his conscientious and untiring efforts. As a physician in later life he was widely respected for his great common sense and tender heartedness. One incident that came up during the Civil War is well worth repeating for it shows the readiness with which he called to his aid knowledge which was within the reach of everyone yet utilized by none. When Dr. Kneeland arrived in the camp he found sanitary conditions in most particulars to be good—the tents were moved frequently, the bedding aired regularly, the grounds kept clean, water supply good and well cared for and to all appearances everything was being done to promote the health of the soldiers. In spite of all precautions, the latrines where was dumped all the refuse from the camp gave forth a very displeasing and unhealthful odor. Lime and other disinfectants were freely used but the odor persisted. Dr. Kneeland called for a detail of men and immediately had them spread a thin covering of fresh earth in the latrines each day. The odor soon disappeared. The Surgeon General on making his rounds of inspection mentioned that he missed the odor that had always characterized all of Uncle Sam’s military camps. Dr. Kneeland explained the reason. Col. Gibbs, commander of the regiment, who was present, spoke out, saying that it was a fine idea and asked Dr. Kneeland if it was original with him. The Dr. explained that it was not, that it was old and that he had gotten it from an old book. Col. Gibbs was a widely read man and prided himself on his knowledge of things in general and particularly on his knowledge of medicine. He said he would like to know what book it was. A very old book, indeed, Dr. Kneeland assured him, and one which he (the Dr.) supposed Col. Gibbs had read, at least if he hadn’t he ought to; and with that he stepped into his tent and brought out a copy of the Holy Bible. Turning to the sanitary laws of Moses he showed the colonel his authority for the use of earth as a deodorizer and disinfectant. Soon after this the use of earth in covering latrines became almost universal throughout the military camps. Dr. Kneeland was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet Colonel by President Johnson and Governor Fenton for “assiduous and unwearied services to the Union.
Kneeland, Benjamin T. of Tuscarora, b. Jun 3 1825. Doctor Kneeland, the veteran physician of the community. Dr. Kneeland lived in Tuscarora right below the Rittenhouse farm. Benjamin T. Kneeland was born June 3rd, 1825 and was 80 years and 3 months old at the time of his death, September 3rd, 1905. He chose the medical profession for a life’s work and was graduated from Geneva Medical College June 23rd, 1851. On June 14th he married Miss Harriet Niles, daughter of Hon. Geo. N. Niles, of Scott, Cortland County, N. Y., and they immediately came to Oakland, Livingston Co., where he began the practice of his profession. He soon afterward moved to Nunda and later to Geneseo and to Lima. In 1862 he decided to join the First New York Dragoons as surgeon and he took his family back to Nunda to live.

Is there a relationship between Nellie Ida Kuhn and the people who have a large headstone and smaller gravestones in Dutch Street Cem which read: “KUHN”; “FATHER”; “JUDSON D” (dates are not visible as stone in sinking into ground and dates are on the bottom in the dirt.) and “MOTHER”; “ALICE M.”; “1860-1913”.
