For the past two years the Nunda Historical Society has been working on the renovation of the southern portion of the Historical Building on Portage Road. Once completed, the project will...

create a 600 square foot Museum area for historical displays on Nunda area history and a 17' X 21' archival storage room

allow for creation of a revolving displays and educational area in the current display area

provide for efficient heating and lighting of the newly renovated area

expand the available space for meetings and programs
provide lighting for the parking lot

These physical improvements will help us to carry on our goal of preserving, presenting, and promoting Nunda area history.

Here are some details......


1999 The Nunda Historical Society acquired our building in 1999, a donation by Nunda residents Tom and Marjorie Stamp. Built in the early 1900s, the structure had housed a knife works, gas station, car dealership, and Stamp's RV sales and service. With the help of two NYS Legislative Grants, local donations, and volunteers, work soon began on renovating the building.	2003 The Nunda Historical Society dedicated the new Museum and Rose Shave Gallery. The renovations included an office, kitchen, handicapped accessible building entrance and restroom, an office, and an archives rooms to hold the Society's collections. About 1000 sq ft of floor space in the southern part of the building was left undeveloped and could only be used for storage.	Spring 2010 Work began on the southern portion of the building in 2009. The old garage doors were removed and a new west wall was built. Members removed the old tin and boards from the interior walls. When the old ceiling was removed, it was determined that the old roof was in bad shape and would have to be replaced. The roof work was completed in 2010 at a cost of $16,000.	Fall 2010 Increasing historical programs and a growing collection of Nunda artifacts necessitation the renovation of the undeveloped southern portion of the Historical Building. Although the Society had secured a $25,000 NYS Legislative Grant, additional funding would be needed to complete the project. The Society began a building fund drive with a goal of $25,000

Winter 2011

With plans complete and bids awarded, work began on the renovation project. Hark Homes of Dalton is doing the general construction work with materials from the Nunda Lumber Yard. Dana Rathbun is installing the new heating system while Doug Hesse is handling the electrical work.

Left: Early January - the new floor has been installed and interior walls are being constructed. This was followed by the closing in of the east wall and complete insulation of the exterior walls and ceilings.

Right: Late January -With the electrical wiring completed and the heating system operating, the drywall has been hung. This photograph is taken inside what will become the new museum area looking west.

The estimated cost of the current construction project is $39,000. This does not include the cost of flooring or furnishing the new archives room or the new museum display area.

To augment the legislative grant of $25,000, the Society set a goal of $25,000 for the building fund drive. At this time about $14,000 has been raised through member contributions. Although this enable us to complete the current project, we will need the additional funds to complete the flooring and furnishing of the rooms and allow us to maintain the treasury at an appropriate level to meet our normal operating expenses.
